Summary:
The pride of Starfleet. That sums up the Galaxy Class, one of the largest most advanced powerful ships in the fleet. The Galaxy class is the result of an ambitious development program at Utopia Planitia Fleetyards, that began service in the 2360's. The Galaxy class is primarily designed to replace the aged Ambassador and Oberth class in research missions. The Galaxy Class was design for long term deep space missions, which includes scientific exploration, diplomatic and defense duties.
Galaxy class starships feature a detachable and independently operational saucer section, three shuttlebays and a captain's yacht at the bottom of the saucer. Galaxy Class ships have 42 decks, a habitable area of 800,000mē, and a spaceframe design of 100 years. Because of the families onboard its saucer separation procedure helps greatly in getting civilians out of harms way in hostile battle situations. There are three shuttlebays, one on the saucer section, and two on the neck large enough to carry Danube Class runabouts.
The production and amount of Galaxy Class ships have greatly increased since the Dominion War. Further production of the class will remain for the forseeable future.
